A rare pocket Game Counter or Norfolk Liar, used for counting numbers of shot game. Graduated with six dials; one each for hares, rabbits, woodcock, pheasants, snipe and partridges. Nickel silver on both faces. Stamped James Dixon & Sons on one face, and the trademark trumpet in the other. Two dials are missing through use - could probably be replaced by a silversmith.
These pocket Game Counters were used to keep tally of shot game, and give bragging rights amongst shooters - and no doubt one or two extra clicks were made hence the nickname ‘Norfolk Liar’!
Made and marketed by James Dixon & Sons, silversmiths of Sheffield, England. Complete examples have reached £1600-2200 in recent years
